高考英语中意思相近词语的区别：whether与if
在高考英语中，无论是单选题还是完形填空，答案中常常会出现一些意思相近的词语。在选择时，需要着重了解这些词语的含义、用法和区别。
whether与if的区别用法
whether和if都是连接词，可以引导宾语从句，表示“是否”。一般情况下，两个词可以互换使用。例如：
- He asked whether [if] we wanted a drink. (他问我们是否想喝一杯。)
- He didn’t tell me if [whether] he would come. (他没有告诉我他是否会来。)
在某些情况下，需要使用不同的词语。
1. 条件状语从句
引导条件状语从句时，只能使用if（意为“如果”）。
2. 否定宾语从句
引导否定宾语从句时，通常使用if，不用whether。例如：
- I don’t care if it doesn’t rain. (我不在乎天是否下雨。)
注：在个别情况下，也可以使用whether引导否定宾语从句，如wonder、not sure等词语后面的从句。
3. 特殊情况
以下情况下通常使用whether，不用if：
- 宾语从句位于句首时。例如：
- Whether he has left, I can’t say. (他是否走了，我说不定。)
- 主语从句位于句首时。例如：
- Whether he will come is still a question. (他是否会来还是个问题。)
- 表语从句时。例如：
- The question is whether we should go on with the work. (问题是我们是否应该继续进行这项工作。)
- 让步状语从句时。例如：
- Whether he agrees or not, I shall do that. (不管他同意与否，我都要那样做。)
- 同位语从句时。例如：
- The question whether we need it has not been considered. (我们是否需要它还没有考虑。)
- 不定式之前时。例如：
- I’m not sure whether to stay or leave. (我不知是留还是去。)
- 介词之后时。例如：
- It depends on whether the letter arrives in time. (这取决于信是否来得及时。)
- 与or not直接连用时。例如：
- I will write to you whether or not I can come. (我能不能来，我将写信告诉你。)
注：在个别情况下，除了or not以外，也可以使用if。
- 少数动词后引导宾语从句时。例如：
- We discussed whether we should hold a meeting. (我们讨论了是否要开一个会。)
