online、on line、on the line
这三个长得相似的词和词组之间的关系剪不断理还乱。
今天就来逐个 разобраться！
on line / on the line
on line 主要有两种含义。
line 有队列的意思
on line = 排队
on line 还表示在线、上线的意思
就相当于 online
大家平时登录 QQ 或游戏的“上线”，就是用 online 表示。
而 on the line 就和上网、排队没关系了。
on the line 表示处于危险状态、命悬一线
一般用 put/lay sth on the line 的形式。
可以是 jobs、career、reputation、friendship 等。
也可以用 put one's neck/oneself on the line
表示把...置于危险的状态中。
除此之外，on the line 还表示打电话、保持通话的意思。
这时候 line 相当于 phone。
Eg
This shouldn't take much longer—Mom's on line to pay right now.
这花不了多长时间，妈妈已经排队交钱了。
By making such a controversial movie, he has really put his reputation on the line.
拍出这样一部有争议的电影，他真是冒着声名狼藉的风险。
line of latitude / longitude
line 还可以表示两个区域之间人为假设的线
比如经线纬线，国际日期变更线这类地理名词，或是国界线、州界线这类地区边线。

line意为观点、态度
相当于opinion/attitude
official line即为官方立场、官方说法
一般指国家层面
而take a tough/firm/hard line on sth
表示对...采取强硬态度
例如
Japan's official line is that it does not allow the immigration of unskilled foreign labourers.
日本官方立场是不允许非熟练外国劳工移民。
The school takes a very tough line on drugs.
学校对药物采取了强硬态度。
越界
out of line字面意思为超出某条线
可理解为越界、不齐平，
越界指人或事物超出某条线
也可引申为出格、过分、不合适
可用get/step out of line表示
例如
I told you not to get out of line. Now, get back in line.
我告诉过你不要越界，现在回到你的队伍里。
He was out of line when he talked back to his mother.
他跟母亲顶嘴时有些过分了。
