在英语中，用来表示“多少”或“第几”的词汇称为数词（numeral）。
数词不仅与不定代词有相似之处，它们在句中的作用也往往类似于形容词或名词。
基数词：用于表示“多少”的词被称为基数词（cardinal numeral），如：one（一个），twenty（二十），hundred（百）等。
序数词：用于表示“第几”的词称为序数词（ordinal numeral），如：first（第一），twentieth（第二十），hundredth（第一百）等。

说明：

说明：
1) 对于100及以上的基数词，常用hundred、thousand、million、billion等。
2) 在读数时，十位数和百位数之间可以使用and，但并不是所有情况下都需要使用and，例如850可以读作eight hundred fifty。
基数词的句中作用包括：
1) 主语
Two plus nine is eleven. 二加九等于十一。
Four times six is twenty-four. 四乘六等于二十四。
Three of them went to college last year. 他们中有三人去年上了大学。
（如说the three of them，表示“他们三个人”）
2) 宾语
Give me two. 给我两个。
3) 定语
There are nineteen students in our class. 我们班有十九名学生。
My uncle bought two hand tractors recently. 我叔叔最近买了两台手扶拖拉机。
(注) 在作为定语时，hundred（百）、thousand（千）和million（百万）不使用复数形式；作为名词时（后面常接of短语）则需使用复数形式。例如：
Our country has a population of 1,200 million people. 我国有十二亿人口。
There are three thousand students in the university. 这所大学有三千名学生。
Rice has been cultivated in the East for thousands of years. 水稻在东方已种植了几千年。
Maize is the most important food crop for millions of people in the world. 玉米是全世界数百万人的主要粮食。
4) 表语
She is just fourteen. 她刚满十四岁。
He was already forty when he began to learn English. 他开始学英语时已四十岁了。

说明：
1) 除了“first”（第一）、“second”（第二）、“third”（第三）等序数词有特殊形式外，1-19的其他序数词均由基数词后加-th构成。
2) 部分序数词拼写不规则，如：fifth、eighth、ninth、twelfth。
3) 十位数的序数词构成规则是：将十位数基数词的-y变为-i，再加上-eth。例如：twenty变为twenty-first。
4) 基数词“几十几”变为序数词时，只对个位数进行变化，十位数保持不变。例如：twenty-one变成twenty-first。
5) 序数词的缩写形式为阿拉伯数字加上序数词的最后两个字母。例如：1st，2nd，3rd，4th，31st，82nd，93rd，94th等。
序数词的具体用法：
1) 主语
The first is better than the second. 第一个比第二个更好。
2) 宾语
He was among the first to arrive. 他是最早到达的。
3) 定语
China exploded its first atom bomb in October 1964. 中国在1964年10月爆炸了第一颗原子弹。
His father died in the Second World War. 他父亲在第二次世界大战中去世。
4) 表语
Jack is always the first to get to the office in the morning. 杰克每天早晨总是第一个到办公室。
