Rooted in the Song dynasty, it has over 800 years of history. Its popularity flourished during the early Qing dynasty, culminating in the heyday of its development during the early Republic of China, making it a "treasure house of Chinese folk culture."

The process of creating a Laoting shadow puppet involves several stages: selection of materials, skin making, drawing, carving, coloring, dehydration, stitching, and assembling the puppet onto a shaft. Manipulation of these puppets requires a delicate balance of skill and expertise.

操纵乐亭皮影戏涉及“上线”和“下线”两种方式，又称“拿”和“贴”。每个皮影由三根“箭杆”支撑，艺人需凭借精湛的技巧控制其起卧蹲立。有时，一位艺人需同时操控多个角色，技艺高超者被尊称为“箭杆王”或当代的“操纵大师”。

The characters in Laoting shadow puppetry are diverse and rich in artistic expression. Male roles are categorized as "Sheng," while female roles are referred to as "Dan." There are also distinct subcategories for different types of performances, such as "Wen" for singing plays and "Wu" for military acrobatic plays. The elderly and clowns also have their own unique representations.

"Xiao Sheng" represents young boys, while "Lao Sheng" portrays elderly men. "Wen Dan" and "Wu Dan" respectively depict female characters in singing and military acrobatic plays.
